September 7th, 1968-Good evening America, this is Channel 3 news covering the Miss America Pageant protest, live as it's happening. This pageant protest was organized by the New York Radical Women, a group that people in the news industry have grown quite familiar with. These women are present at just about every civil rights and anti-war movement. There are about four hundred women gathered here in Atlantic City, New Jersey tonight carrying signs that read things such as "ALL WOMEN ARE BEAUTIFUL," "NO MORE BEAUTY STANDARDS," and "WELCOME TO THE CATTLE AUCTION." Other women are taking part in theatrical stunts like crowning a sheep with the famous Miss America title. We've managed to get a minute or so to talk to Robin Morgan, one of the protest's leading organizers. Ms. Morgan, what would you like everyone tuning in at home to hear about this protest? "To win approval, we must be both sexy and wholesome, delicate but able to cope, demure yet titillatingly bitchy or should we say ill-tempered... Miss America andPlayboy's centerfolds are sisters under the skin." Thanks Mrs. Morgan. Okay America, it seems that something is happening within one of the crowds of rebellious women. It appears to be a large garbage can with items being thrown into it. Let's try to get closer to the action. Okay, women are throwing things like tweezers, dish soap, false eyelashes, wigs, and even some Ladies Home Journal magazines into it! Apparently this trash can is being referred to as the Freedom Trash Can. This stunt is attracting an even larger crowd on the other side of the boardwalk and this time the crowd has mixed genders. However, I don't think this new crowd is here to support the cause. Many young men are shouting that the protesters themselves should be thrown into their own Freedom Trash Can! I'm also getting word from a reporter inside the Atlantic City Convention Center that some women, presumably members of the N.Y.R.W., had bought tickets to the pageant and have just unraveled a large banner reading "WOMEN'S LIBERATION." Apparently no one is paying them any mind though, and events inside are continuing just as they normally would. Well, this just about concludes tonight's broadcast, some protesters are now shouting at the conclusion of the pageant, "DON'T MISS AMERICA," possibly hinting at similar events to take place at next year's convention. I guess we'll all just have to tune in and see!
